Wood Veneer, Different Types of Veneer Options

A wood veneer can give a refined finish to a variety of different surfaces, including tabletops, walls, and flooring. However, these veneers are available in a wide range of different stylistic types and options, which are well worth taking a look at before making your remodelling decisions. Natural veneer is perhaps the most popular type, which is crafted from timber, giving a realistic look and feel to any veneers. Burl veneers are one example of this, which are fashioned from the growth that appears on trees, which has a swirly appearance that is more unique when examined closely.

Lacquered veneer is another type of popular wood veneer. This begins with a natural wooden material, which is then enhanced with the application of a high gloss lacquer finish. The gloss level of the finish can be specified, so that you could go for a more natural matte look if you wish. These are environmentally friendly, and have the added benefit of being used for a basecoat for other materials or paint if you do choose to complete further work on the surface that is being boarded in veneers. Because the lacquer is already included, this saves a great deal of time and energy on refinishing the veneers later.

Another method that is used to enhance the appearance of a natural wood veneer is retoning. This is a process of applying colour to the wood, enhancing the natural tones of the wood and bringing out the appearance of patterns that lie within it, far better than you might normally be able to. Over time, the natural tones that lie within wood will fade or change due to the elements. Brown species of wood lighten, while veneers that have a natural grey tone to them might turn green. This process can be combated with the process of retoning.

These are just a few of the various factors to take into consideration when you are looking for the best type of wood veneer to put into your home. Another thing to think about is the type of wood to use in natural veneers. The best choice for you will depend on the decorations throughout the rest of your home. If you have a warm toned decorating scheme, than warmer types of wooden veneers such as oak or magnolia will probably be a better option, for example, or you could supplement the tones with a warmer finish.
